The Baba Earrings feature triangular malachite chrysocolla cabochons, set in sterling silver. They are inspired by our visit to the Peranakan Mansion earlier this year, during our visit to Penang, Malaysia. Peranakan refers to people of mixed Chinese and Malay heritage, which results in a colourful culture!

Malachite is a mineral that contains copper. Whenever copper deposits are weathered, other minerals can form on malachite like chrysocolla. In history, malachite would have been mined just to be smelted to obtain copper. Malachite was also used as a mineral pigment in paints during the Renaissance period. Perhaps more famously, the ancient Mayans buried a noblewoman known presently as the Red Queen with a funerary mask made entirely of malachite!

Like other gemstones, malachite is also reputed to posses metaphysical properties. It is associated with transformation as it helps to reveal and heal emotional pain. It has been worn historically to protect from lighting strikes and contagious diseases while promoting good health and success in relationships.

This pair of silver earrings are adorned on sterling silver hook wires which are friendly for most ears.
