Nyonya Earrings
The Nyonya Earrings feature oval azurite cabochons, set in sterling silver. They are inspired by our visit to the Peranakan Mansion earlier this year, during our visit to Penang, Malaysia. Peranakan refers to people of mixed Chinese and Malay heritage, which results in a colourful culture!
Azurite is a mineral that contains copper but is also known to be unstable. In nature, azurite will eventually weather away to reveal malachite, another copper carbonate mineral. Due to its low hardness, azurite has also been widely used as a pigment by medieval painters. However, the vivid blue colour of azurite is very sensitive to heat so care must be taken to not expose the azurite earrings to extreme temperatures.
Like other gemstones, azurite is also reputed to possess metaphysical properties. It is associated with spiritual growth and the crown chakra. Azurite is also said to bring wisdom and temper the mind by alleviating confusion and stress.
